State Senator Jean Preston Speaks at January 3rd District Meeting
Vice Chairman, Rachel Sturz, introduced State Senator Jean Preston, serving Carteret, Craven and Pamlico Counties, in State Senate District 2, elected in 2006. Senator Preston is no stranger to Raleigh having served 7 terms in the NC State House. She spoke of 10 important issues cited by the Republicans in the NC Sate Senate this year:
1. Restoration of faith in State Government
2. Ending North Carolina’s status as a haven for illegal aliens, this is a hot issue
3. Improving education
4. Reducing the NC tax burden on its citizens
5. Eliminating the death tax
6. Again, addressing the Marriage Amendment
7. Mal practice reform
8. Increasing healthcare availability
9. Private property rights protection
10. Protection of our citizens, like the passing of Jessica’s Law and requirement of DNA samples from convicted felons.
Senator Preston then moved to politics and elections for 2008, stating that in the last election cycle the Democrats far outspent Republicans. Some campaigns are now spending up to a million dollars and beyond. She continued with some advice, raise money, be a likeable candidate and identify with the citizens on the issues. Senator Preston recognized Jan Grube as a mentor and as an instrumental party in encouraging her to run for office. She also stated that it is very important for a legislator to stay engaged in their district and practice continuous involvement with constituents. Senator Preston contends that it a good opportunity and possibility for Republicans to win elections this year. And the North Carolina General Assembly is now experiencing harmony among Republicans in the House and Senate.
Q & A followed with additional comments about some current issues. How redistricting and illegal aliens could change the dynamics of an election. A recent poll cited that 70% of North Carolinians are against in-state tuition for illegal aliens to attend NC Community Colleges. Another major issue is the ongoing practice of the issuance of drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens.
Craven County Chairman, Mike Speciale, noted that Senator Preston is a woman of integrity and, when it is within her power, keeps her promises to her constituents. Chairman Pruett concurred with some additional positive remarks.
